Word lists are easy to make and hard to remember. A word sticks when you meet it again in the sentence where it first meant something. Tipword keeps that sentence for you, from whatever you were reading.
How it works
- Hold ⌥ Option and point at a word in any app. Its meaning in that sentence appears beside it.
- Press S while still holding ⌥. The word is saved with its sentence, the translation and the app.
- Open Words from the menu bar to search, sort and hear your words.
- When words are due, Review appears in the menu bar. It takes about a minute.
Review a minute a day
Each word comes back as the sentence you met it in. Recall the meaning, press Space to check, then answer with 1, 2 or 3.
Words you know come back less often: 4 days, 9 days, then 3 weeks. After four in a row a word counts as learned. At most 8 new words a day, so it never piles up.
Export to Anki
Already use Anki? Export your saved words as an Anki deck, with the sentence on the front. Or export a CSV for any other app.
Works in any app
Browser tools like Language Reactor stop at the browser. Tipword saves words from Books, Preview, Mail, Slack and your browser, and from subtitles, photos and scanned PDFs too.
Private by design
- Everything stays on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded.
- History, which keeps every word you point at, is off until you turn it on.
- Passwords and Messages are left out by default: nothing from them goes to History. You can leave out any app.
- For websites, Tipword keeps the page title, never the address.
