Why Tipword

Looking up one word shouldn’t take six steps.

Without Tipword

  1. 1Select the word
  2. 2Copy it⌘ C
  3. 3Switch to Google Translate⌘ Tab
  4. 4Paste it⌘ V
  5. 5Read the answer
  6. 6Switch back, find your place⌘ Tab

And in subtitles, photos and scanned PDFs, you can’t even select the word.

With Tipword

Holding Option and pointing at the German word “Fenster” shows “window”.

Hold a key and point. That’s it.

The meaning appears right beside the word, even where you can’t select it. Let go and it’s gone. Lives in your menu bar.

More than a translation

The meaning in this sentence.

Words change with the sentence around them. Tipword reads the whole sentence, picks the right sense, and shows how the word is used.

Pointing at “left” in “Maria left her keys at home” shows “dejó”, a verb, the past of leave, and the whole sentence in Spanish.

The right sense

A river bank is orilla, not banco. The sentence decides.

How it’s used

Past of leave, plural of child, phrasal verb, idiom. Shown when you’re reading English.

In context

The sentence in your language, with the word in bold. Works in images and subtitles too.

Who it’s for

For anyone who reads in a second language.

Saved words

Keep the words you meet.

Save a word without leaving the page. Tipword keeps the sentence you met it in, then brings it back until it sticks.

Pressing S while the meaning of “reluctant” is showing saves it: the tooltip says Saved to Words.

01

Press S to save

While the meaning is showing, press S. No window, no typing. Press C to copy it instead.

The Words window lists saved words. “left” is selected, with its meaning and the sentence it was met in, in Safari.

02

Find it with its sentence

Every saved word keeps the sentence, the app and every later place you met it. Search, sort, and hear it read aloud.

Review shows the sentence and asks what the word means, then Again, Hard or Got it.

03

Review a minute a day

Each word comes back in its sentence. Words you know return less often. Up to 8 new words a day, from the menu bar.

Can I try it before I pay?

Download it and look around for free. To start translating, add a license. If it’s not for you within 14 days, you get a full refund.

How is it different from Google Translate or the Translate menu on Mac?

Both make you select or copy the text first, then show the answer somewhere else. Tipword translates the word under your pointer, right where it is, even where text can’t be selected. See how it compares with Google Translate on Mac, the built-in Translate menu and DeepL.

Which languages are included?

20 translate on your Mac with Apple, free, on macOS 15 or later. 34 more use your own Google key; Google’s first 500,000 characters a month are free. How to get a key ›

Does it work offline? Is my text private?

Yes. The 20 Apple languages work as an offline translator: they translate right on your Mac, with no internet, on macOS 15 or later. With your own Google key, only the word you point at goes to Google. We never see it.

Why does it need Accessibility access?

To read the word under your pointer. Screen Recording is optional and only reads words in images and PDFs.

Can I save words and review them later?

Yes. Press S while a meaning is showing to save the word with its sentence. Open Words from the menu bar to find it, and Review to practise a few words a day. You can export to Anki or CSV. Vocabulary builder for Mac ›

Is my reading history private?

History is off until you say yes, and everything stays on your Mac. Passwords and Messages are left out by default, and you can leave out any app. For websites, only the page title is kept, never the address.

What happens after a year?

Tipword keeps working. Updates released after your first year aren’t included.
